If its the ebpv rod, you can remove it and plug it, easy, or you can get a rebuild kit if you still use/want it. If its the pedestal orings, turbo has to come off. That's not real bad, but one bolt really sucks that is under that housing the ebpv rod goes into. Neither one are expensive if you do it yourself.
That is the exhaust back pressue valve. It closes the exhaust in the cold to help in warmup. Lots of us have it unplugged or completely removed. On the turbo pedestal, backside, there is a round cylindrical(that word can't be right) looking thing that has a rod coming out of it towards the pass. side. That is the ebpv rod. If there is oil coming out of where the rod is, that could be your only leak. Look at that first. If its dry, its the pedestal orings. They could both be leaking, you never know.
That silver/gray part in your picture with the oil on it has that ebpv housing on it on the back. That's the pedestal, and has orings right above where that oil is too.
Thanks. ill look into it further tomorrow when i take breaks from the 77 pissing me off lol Im hoping ill be able to fix it myself, but ive never done anything with a Diesel so i have no idea what id be doing, i have a couple buddy's who use to work with Cat and one of them runs his own Garage now, if i cant figure it out ill get them to give me a hand
i was talking to someone about it an he asked about exhaust blow by... i noticed some blow by the other day on it.. he said it was the ebpv mostlikely then

Just for the info to the OP: the pedestal has two o-rings in the upper part and 2 o-ring in the bottom part. (two different sizes) All of them has to be changed.
Yes, the pedestal and turbo come out, then the turbo comes off the pedestal for those two O rings whick are in between the turbo and pedestal. The other two O rings under the pedestal fit in a recessed area of the block of the motor. I think there is a write up on removing the turbo. Its doable but not fun because its very hard to get at the rear drivers side bolt holding the pedestal to the block.
