5.4L Sizzling or Rattling Noise

I have a 5.4L V8 and auto trans in my 1999 F250 and I have gibson headers and straight piped exhaust. When I sit in neutral and rev it up, it sounds really clean and has a nice exhaust note. however, when i drive and it hits 1500rpms and up, it almost sounds like there is a sizzling noise or rapid rattling/ticking noise coming form the engine.

Something leads me to believe its not the engine or exhaust only because it only does it in drive or reverse, not neutral or park.

Any one else have this problem or know what it could be?

hey there garst

I went on the forums searching for someone that ran into this problem also. guess i'm not that crazy. did you find any fix for it? looks like we might be the only ones.

i usually hear the sizzling, or i like to call it, buzzing noise during slow acceleration like what you mentioned around 1500-2000rpm. any help is appreciated. thanks.

Its hard to tell if it is really coming from the engine or not, only because the only time hear it is when i am driving. It is at its worst when im going about 55 or 60 and its rumblin along in overdrive at about 1500 rpm. And then, if you wanna pass someone, and you get your foot into it in overdrive, it gets even worse!

I think it might be just because my truck has so many miles, and miles means noises!

I have gibson headers on my 5.4 and have the same noise. it drives me insane, its like a very minor exhaust leak, that i hear mostly when the engine is lugging along. Trying to sell it ASAP as i already have a new truck waiting for me...

I guess it's something I'll just have to explore more. Im just a little concerned cause mine is an 08 with about 75K so its not really old.

Hey Miles been following your posts on the other forums. Heard about your upgrade. Excited for you man. Massive power increase for you. Been meaning to ask if you think your headers were a MUST upgrade for a good amount of HP and TQ increase. Trying to get a decent setup for what I have.

How much are you selling yours for anyway ?

Thanks! If i had to do it again, i would never do headers. I barely noticed a power difference, pretty much just on the first drive then never again. Plus they make a ticking noise that drives me insane

Check the inspection plate on the trans bell housing. There's 2 bolts holding it in, take it off and take a drive, bet it goes away!
