Can someone post a picture of a healthy, normally functioning rear axle vent from their truck? I would really appreciate it. Also, where would I potentially find parts to replace it? You'll have to forgive me because I have absolutely no experience in dealing with these vents.
Joseph, where the brake lines are on the rearend, they meet on the drivers side of the center section, on the top/back of the housing. There is a block there that the brake lines tee off of and go each way. There is a hose on that block, that is your vent. It goes up to the frame on the drivers side.
The front vent hose is connected to the center section of the 50.
One thing to look at if you're having trouble with the vent or if the rear axle is seeping fluid is to make sure that the vent line is not plugged up. My experience has been that the hose itself is usually fine and it is the hole that goes down through that little block in the axle itself that gets plugged up. I think I used a drill and a drill bit to clean mine out.

Okay. That's what I thought. I've got a picture of mine. The reason why I didn't post it is because I wasn't sure that what is pictured is supposed to be the vent.
Fuel hose will work to remake the line, right? What do I need to do to get that vent part working correctly, though? In other words, what would you guys do to fix this if it were your truck?
So that part is supposed to go straight through to the axle? It's supposed to be open? There's not like an element there or anything?
Edit: And then when I set up the line, what should I use at the end of it to make sure that crap doesn't get into the axle through the vent line? You think an inline fuel filter would work?
The piece the hose attaches to bolts on the housing. Loosen that bolt on top, and you can move that piece a little and clean it and put a new line on. You don't need to do anything else but put a new hose on and re-attach it to the frame, pointing backwards. Mine had a clip on the inside, top of the frame on the drivers side. Unless yours is rusted and gone, it should be there to attach it to. Otherwise, just do some other way of attachment, just point it backwards.
when the vent line goes on my trucks, i replace it with a piece of gas line, clamped at the axle, and a small cheap plastic inline fuel filter on the other end zip tied to the frame
I don't remember which one of the trucks it was, ut one of mine had the stock "mushroom" looking vent cap gone and it had been replaced with a plastic barb 90* fitting. Volume isn't an issue, you just don't want it picking up dirt.
Joseph, If you want to fix it quick any of the methods above are probably fine. If you want the stock cap to put on there, I can look for one in the shop this weekend and if I can find it, I will just mail it to you. Of course, that means it won't go out until Tuesday and you won't have it until late next week at best. Doesn't matter to me. I think I should be able to find one, and might even luck out and find the little clip that holds the line too. No promises, but I don't mind digging around a little for one if you want me to.
Hmm... If the effectiveness of all of these potential solutions is equal, I'd probably rather have the factory setup on there, and I would be very appreciative if you could do that for me, Nate.
No problem man, I found a whole hose, cap and clip, but as I am thinking about it now, it seemed a lot smaller than I think it should have been. I want to make sure later on that it is what you need for the rear axle and not some random piece left over from a fuel tank or something. I will keep you posted.
In my quest for axle ventilation hardware, alas I have failed. All the breathers I have are clearly too small to work for the axle vent, they must be off the fuel tanks. I looked at two different axles here though and they both have the same odd 135* barb fitting on them. Here are some pictures for reference.
