I like Mobil One 75-140 or 75-90weight is even better. This oil makes the 4 speed shift better especially when cold.
FYI do not over fill the trans oil. This causes the main shaft to stop turning to soon between shifts and is hard on syncronizers. I fill mine to just below the fill hole. If you fill it full, let it drain back out all it can before you put the fill plug in.
The owners manual for a '76 actually calls for sae 50w in the manual trans and the t-case but I couldnt find any on the day I was servicing mine so I used the 75-90w. One of these days I'll locate or order some straight 50w and use that

Bama's correct, the factory service manuals do call for 50w motor oil but i (and everyone i know) have always used 90w gear oil, both are the very same viscosity.
Motor oil and gear oil have different characteristics, i wouldn't put motor oil in my differentials so why put it in my transmission and transfer case which both contain gears.

I know, i know, but i gotta part company with big brother on this one.
Gear oils have a much higher level of extreme pressure additives than motor oils do, also there are a lot of additives in motor oil that will serve no purpose in a gear application.
Personally, i'll continue to use gear oil in my tranny and t-case, there are enough differences in the engine vs. tranny/t-case environment that I feel better going that route.
Lastly, as i noted earlier, 50w motor oil and 90w gear oil both share the same viscosity rating so the flow characteristics are the same between the two.

Ok you convinced me lol. I'll probably continue as well due to your argument plus the fact that str8 50w is getting scarce around here.
