Need M5R1 tranny help

I have a '93 Ranger with a M5R1 M5OD 5spd tranny that needs repaired. Apparently these trannies have a leak problem which I found out about much too late. As a result the input shaft and cluster gear were shredded and need to be replaced. Since I have to take it all apart just to replace them I'm going to rebuild it as well. This is a first for me and I would like to know if anyone else out there has attempted it successfully and has any wisdom to share. What's the best repair manual available? Are there any special tools that I'll need? Should I just pay someone to fix it? And how the hell do I get that retaining nut off without spinning the shaft? I've gotten some pretty outrageous quotes (anywhere from $850 to $1500) to have it done professionally. I've priced parts online at $300 for the Input shaft/Cluster gear set and a complete rebuild kit. Just doesn't seem worth it to pay someone else even if it does come with a warranty. I've even looked for a used one but haven't found one for less than $550. What a pain in the ***.
