Reman engines?

Has anyone any experience with this company. My 98' 5.4 has lots of valve train noise. It's been getting loader for about a year now. It has low power and the milage has dropped off from a few years ago. I think it' going. It still runs well and starts right up but can barely pull a trailer, especially in hot & humid weather. When changing it out I would like to go with the 2000 version that has the updated: lengthened spark plug threads, PI heads (+30 hp from 98'), and wider head/gasket sealing surface around the coolant passages.

Opinions please.

Sorry I can't answer your question about the particular reman engine.

I do, however, want to encourage you to do a compression and/or a leak down test, and a good look at oil pressure, to see what you're dealing with, before spending too much money. The bottom end of these engines are incredibly long lived with even a minimal amount of preventive maintenance.

You might very well get by with a top end overhaul and not have to even touch the bottom. If you want to go to PI heads, you will have to have the matching intake manifold, and it might very well be that you could get the whole setup somewhere and take care of everything on an exchange basis.

Woops! I just re-read your post and noticed 5.4. I'm not intimately familiar with the 5.4 as opposed to the 4.6, but I think the PI heads only apply to the two valve motors. Maybe there was also a Performance Improvement program for the 5.4 as well. I know there have been several different heads over the years.

Hope this helps.

Finding and installing some reworked 03' PI heads and a manifold would be big bucks too. Along with timing chains, tensioners, 03' intake etc. Some quotes I've received on a nation wide (web) engine search so far are between $1500 to $1800 for engines in the 70 to 90 K milage range.

I'm sure you know what a PITA doing Leakdown and compression test are on the F150 5.4L. There's baring room to install the plugs once lest screwing in adapters back and forth to get the results? It was no fun getting those rear plugs out and back in without stripping them or getting dirt in the cylinders.

Well Tuff, you make a good case. If your goal is getting a solid engine under the hood AND adding more power, then another engine might be best for you.

I've never been a fan of buying a used engine, but I'm an old geezer that goes back to the days when engines didn't last very long.

Best of luck with it and keep us posted.

The other problem is that by putting 03' PI heads on my 98' non PI block, I would end up with super high compression (which some people do on purpose) but I don't want to end up with blown head gaskets down the road. I want to drive it another 200,000 miles + with no or few issues.

Blown head gaskets would probably not result, but being unable to run on pump gas would very likely be your problem.

Sorry I'm not up on the 5.4 parts interchangability issues. I know a little of this with the 4.6. I didn't even know that the 5.4 ever had a power improvement program.

I'll be interested in learning about what you come up with. Keep us posted.
