e brake issue

a couple days ago, i was parking on a steep hill, so i pressed the e-brake to reduce the load on the tranny. while doing so, i heard/felt a loud "POP" and the pedal went soft. its always been nice and firm, though i rarely use it. i figured i broke a cable. but today when i was under the truck, all the cables seem to be intact. working from the bracket that tees out from one cable to two, i can't pull the front cable to the rear any, and when i pull either of the rear cables, i'm pulling against a conservative amount of spring tension, and they return normally.
before this happened, the brake held quite firmly, now it still works a little, but not near as strong.
any idea what happened?

If you "can't pull the front cable to the rear any" w/parking brake engaged or released there's a good chance the cable seized & snapped inside the sheath.

Try to pull forward on cable at park brake mechanism under dash. If it popped in sheath you may be able to simply pull rusted off end right out.

Warning: Be prepared to turn air blue installing new front cable.
