MBRP or Gibson

MBRP or Gibson
Here are the two different cat back systems I am considering.
MBRP Performance Exhaust
Part # S5216409
Gibson Performance Exhaust - Trucks, SUV, Diesel, RV, and Marine. Performance Exhaust for the Enthusiast
Part # 619654
My truck is an '09 with the 6.8l v10. Before anyone tells me....I know it wont sound like a V8 nor do I want it to. I am simply looking for a little bit more sound, better flow for towing and highway driving. Does anyone have any experience with either of these kits? If so what were your results? I know MBRP made a 4" kit for the older model sd but this is a 3" kit.
MBRP: 3" pipe, 6"x24" muffler (straight through)
Gibson: 3" pipe, 8"x24" muffler (chambered)
Seems like the MBRP is similar to the Banks Monster Exhaust.
Any experience or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks, Doug

With our newer trucks, I don't think that we really need the larger exhaust, especially since we need some slight back pressure. From the factory, IIRC, the exhaust pipe is pretty good size, I think around 3". I just cut my muffler off and welded in a piece of pipe. It's not real loud compared to some of the Crapolet's that I've heard and is definitely not as loud as the 5.4.

You already have a mandrel bent 3" system on your truck. Replacing a 3" system with a 3" system does not really make sense unless your OE system is bad.
If the state you live does not require a muffler you could always delete the muffler and keep the resonator. Or just replace the stock muffler with something louder and ditch the resonator or keep the resonator. Add an exhaust tip to finish it off. The Banks exhaust is 3" where it hooks up to the stock system but bumps up to 3.5" after the muffler. The theory behind this is that the exhaust slows down after passing through the muffler and the larger tailpipe helps to evacuate the exhaust more effectively. If it works that way I do not know for sure. Banks makes quality stuff but you pay for it. Gibson seems to make quality exhausts as well so I would have no qualms going with them. You will most likely find you will ahve a better sounding truck with a chambered muffler. That is why I run a large capacity Flowmaster on my truck. The straight through mufflers with packing sounded more ricey and droney on my truck.
Don't expect any kind of real noticable imrovement with a cat-back exhaust. The extra sound gives a lot of people the illusion that there is some kind of difference but if you dyno the vehicle or take it to the track the actual performance difference is marginal. Some exhaust systems can actually cause a loss in performance.

I have thought about cutting out the stock muffler and replacing it with an aftermarket one but decided to keep the stock system in tact in case I ever want to put it back on. Also, due to the location of the resonator it would require custom bending from a shop in town and a normal pipe bender would reduce the id eliminating the benefit of removing the resonator. I'm not worried about the diameter of the kits as many people have said the stock exhaust is pretty good. Im simply trying to get a little bit of sound and a little better flows. I found a website selling the all stainless MBRP kit for $345 wich is $150 less then the Gibson. I also plan on ordering a programmer from Mike before 9/3 (Sale) and installing the Airaid intake.

You will like the 5 Star tuner. Far more gains with the tuner even on 87 vs the exhaust.
Flowmaster also has aluminized and stainless versions for the 08'-10' trucks. I have installed 2 of them on the earlier 03' and 04' trucks. Anutoanything has some of the best prices around, I have ordered 2 systems from them along with other parts before.

Thanks for the info. I think I am going to give Mike a call tomorrow and ask him what he thinks of the two systems also. I am thinking I will be going with the MBRP since it is significantly less $$$$. I am excited about the tune! I have bought from AutoAnything before, but I just found a website called www.exhaustrack.com that blows their prices out of the water. For instance, I am looking at an Airaid intake for my truck and it is $270 at AA and $216 at ER.

Go the MBRP website and type S5216409 in the search. It is a universal kit for the 5.4l, 6.2l and 6.8l super dutys. www.exhaustrack.com has the stainless kit for $345 and the aluminized kit for $266.
