I have been a longtime member but this is my first Explorer. I have a 2009 Explorer 4X4 with AWD. If I read the owner manual right, it is in AWD as a default. It is entirely stock.
It sounds like it is in 4X4 all the time. I have put it in 4X4 and the 4X4 light on the instrument panel illuminates. If I select 4X4 Auto, the 4X4 light goes out. I get some front end road noise and sometimes feel slight vibration in the steering wheel Is this normal?
All my previous vehicles have been 4X4, so I know what driving around in 4x4 mode sounds and feels like.
If the switch shows Auto/4Hi/4Lo, you have a ControlTrac transfer case NOT an AWD.
There are 2 HALE sensors on the T/c which monitor rotational difference between the front and read drive shafts. When a difference is detected, and the T/c is in AUTO, 12VDC is applied to an electro magnetic clutch pack which connects the front to the rear drive.....
When in 4Hi the 12VDC is constant and secures the front to the rear..
When in 4Lo the T/C shifts mechanically to a lower ration gear and the clutch locks in.... Philip
Thanks aquanaut20, I understand. But not having driven a Ford with ContolTrac, I guess I am supposed to experience sounds and feedback similar to driving with the system locked in 4x4 Hi?
Under normal driving conditions the truck in Auto should be driven by the rear wheels only.
If you have front drive train noise it requires investigation. If you are experiencing drive line wind up try changing the ATF in the transfer case and ensuring all your tires are similar (size and wear) and carry the same pressure.... Philip
