After doing many U-joints with a hammer and an old king pin, I finally ruined one. I thought about getting a U-joint kit, with the presses and all. But all the shops were closed and we had to come up with some sort of a press, the vice just wasn't big enough.
My father in-law saw one of these, hanging on his wall.
Man that made the job alot easier and worked like a charm. Just thought I would pass it on. No more beating with a hammer, or anything. We used a big socket on the end that the cap goes into, and a smaller socket on the press end. Then just tighten the clamps up and it presses the trunion caps right into place.
santa fe tool is in albuquerque........I live in phoenix.
Look under "astro pneumatic tool company" if you want to buy one. It's made in taiwan and just as good as american made.
i can see how the pipe clamp would help putting the cross caps in but are there any cool tricks for popping out a u joint?....i'd rather not hammer....that means taking the drive shaft all the way out of my truck and when i break it i'd like to get right back to driving as soon as possible you know.
btw i've call about every drivetrain/ tool place in my area and they've never heard of any kind of ujoint tool, except the presses of course
They sell UJ tools in the northerntools automotive catalog. They are in the NAPA catalog too. I use a balljoint tool kit with an impact gun for my stuff.
Those things are great tools. I use the ones I have to do u-joints and also for squeezing the brakes back in to put on new brake pads. They come in handy.
