OT help please!

My younger daughter moved to a place where the last two miles is up a hill to her apartment and is very steep. She needs a 4by4 for winter and I'm so out of touch with the newer ones I don't know what to tell her to get. She says there are alot of Subaru's around there. She wants good mileage . Any suggestions, I've always been able to help her but, like I say, I just don't know about the newer ones anymore. Thanks

How old/ new a car is she looking for? What's her approximate budget?

She will be well served by a Subaru. They make a really good product and they seem to be reliable enough. My brother just got a 2007 Legacy GT and he is in love.

Other than that, I would suggest a Honda CRV or a Toyota RAV4, but they won't be as good on gas as a Subaru Legacy or something similar. Then again if all she needs is all wheel drive, have her look at some of the newer Ford products. Taurus, Flex, Escape, even the Edge, I think can be had with AWD.

Just depends what she wants and how much she wants to spend I guess.

I was just gunna say SHAME ON YOU NATE for not saying Ford Escape! lol
But you got it in there at the end..

My friend purchased a 2010 Ford Escape with all the whistle and bells and she loves it. something like 25k on it and not a single problem. Good mileage too. Close to 30 on highway.

The escapes are pretty nice. Subaru and volvo make a pretty good awd car too. Aside from those maybe a 4x4 ranger or explorer. A 4x tahoe is pretty easy to come by but then you have a chevy AND bad mileage...

Gotta be a ford Glenn, come on! Look where you're asking this question! I'd never recommend anything but a blue oval! Escape!

My Grandma has an 05 Escape that I borrow frequently for road trips. Nice car but the switches are cheap and I'm not fond of the transmission. I think the newer models are better.

It does very well in the snow though. There's not much you can do to make those tires spin. It just catches and goes. Average about 20 mpg. I've gotten 26 mpg on the freeway doing 70 mph.

The Best all around (and first) sport utility vehicle is/was the Jeep cherokee.... not the grand cherokee. they were made from 87-2001 and got a high output version of the I-6 in 92. In 96-97 they got an interior upgrade that included airbags and a bit more comfort (iirc).

They are plentiful, cheap, and with the I-6 engine extremely reliable.

But if she does not need the room of an SUV, defiantly go Subaru.

Some also had the NP242 transfer case that got you full time 4WD along with part time but those were not common.

The 99-01s are the nicest and have more comfort and bells and whistles available.

The later the better.

The Jeep Cherokee XJ makes the Ford Escape look like an early Hyundai station wagon.

I'm going to go now and grab my daughter to read this. These are some good suggestions, thanks a lot guys!

Darin, I try to teach them the 'blue oval', lol, but you know kids! My other daughter just got a new Explorer.

I am not particularly loyal to a specific brand... but certain categories I tend to go with certain brands...

i.e.

Full size Pickup truck - Ford
Small Pickup - Toyota or Nissan
True SUV - AMC/Jeep
AWD grocery getter - Subaru
Full size Luxury highway cruiser (car)- BMW (7 series)
Classic full size car - Mercedes (S - Class)
Early Classic Muscle car - 65-66 Mustang
Late classic muscle car - Trans-am
Classic Pasta Rocket - 308QV/328 Ferrari (not sure I would fit well)
small in town car - Original Mini Cooper (again... not sure I would fit)
Performance Rally - Subaru or Audi

My wife had a 2004 Subaru Legacy sedan in '04. She loved it, and my oldest daughter had an Outback wagon, and now as a Forester, and my youngest daughter had a Baja. I have to say, for a small car/suv for winter driving, they are excellent vehicles and seem to hold up very well, meaning they held up to my daughter's and wife's lead feet, so they have to be pretty good vehicles! LOL!!

I'll give them credit for that Nate. I live in a very small community where I know literally everyone. I'd say at least 25% of them have subarus and they all love them. Never heard of any of them having issues either.
