1995 F150 4x4 with Dana 44. Replacing rotors today and I pulled the spindle as well for a new bearing. On the passenger front the spindle came off and left the axle inside the rubber boot...on the drivers side however the axle came with the spindle and I saw gear oil running out of the front pumpkin. I quickly shoved it back in and then separated the spindle leaving the axle in (when I say axle, I mean the u-joint inward).
Is it ok? I can't see in there due to the frame and stuff. Is there a rubber boot or something? A seal I need to check out or replace? Or is it just fine I put it back in and button everything up? Should I top off the gear oil in the pumpkin?
That is normal. There IS a seal on the diff that it goes into. Now is the time to replace that seal if it needs it.
It wouldn't hurt to check the diff fluid though.
Had to put it all back together last night but I guess if it starts leaking I know it'll be that seal up in there. Is it hard to reach? I couldn't seem to find a way to get to any seals where the Dana front diff pumpkin is.
The seal is nearly impossible to change with the diff still attached to the traction beam. If it wasnt leaking before im sure it will be fine.
Yep, no way your going to change that seal without pulling the front diff... when I converted mine to 4x4, took everything entirely apart, replaced EVERY seal in the D44, then put it back together with fresh fluid and into the truck. Should take a long time before it starts to leak..
