I have 1995 E-150 5L Automatic Trans. When I start the engine and step on the brake to shift from Park into gear the shift lever will not let me move it. If I turn off engine and put key in "Start" position and shift to neutral I can then start motor and put in gear and drive. I imagine it is some type of switch/relay that is at fault. Neutral safety switch? It's not a real problem, but would definitely like to know the cause and fix it, safety issue. Hope you all can help. Thanks , Kevin
First thing in the morning I will check. I am in a wheelchair and its something easy for me to check. Now if it is that, what next? Will let you know the outcome. Thanks for the quick reply.
If there are no brake lights, you will have to diagnose the circuit. If there are brakelights, it might be a mechanical problem. Honestly, since it IS locking you out, its probably an issue with the pedal switch. If you have handcontrols or other devices, good luck. Modifications to the wiring always make it harder.
My hand controls are not wired into the brakes. I googled and found I should also check fuses (#1, #5 ?) Also I see soleniod for it. I am not sure how they are installed. Also to check brake light switch. Hopmg something simple.
The solenoid is working. It is locking the shifter when the engine is running, but releasing when it's off. The problem must be in the brake light circuit or switch.
Yes we searched all over and the fuses were good and no loose wires. Finally my brother found a little black box down nere the brake pedal with 1 blue or green wire with a pin and bolt through it. (Stop Light Swith?) And took it out and replaced it back in and it must have reset itself so now everything is working as it should.(Mercury Switch or such) I will keep and eye on it in case the switch is going bad. I hope it was just an intermittrnt thing. Any more suggestions would be welcome. Thanks, Kevin
It could have come loose or corroded. If the problem returns, I would replace the switch. its Motorcraft p/n SW2239. They are bout 15-20 bucks. You can find generics for as low as 3 or 4 bucks though.

thanks from the future.
was stuck in a customer’s driveway and was able to quickly google this and get myself out of there to diagnose the problem. MUCH APPRECIATED
My 99 E350 the 4 pin trailer towing light socket had the insulation peeling off, shorting it out, blowing the fuse, be sure if there is towing wiring tuck it up out of sunlight.
