Ok, the transmission in my f150 went out a couple weeks ago. Been looking for a replacement.
I've been wondering which transmissions will fit it.
It's an 88 f150 xlt lariat, 2wd, 302 5.0l
I believe it currently has an aod in it.
I found a c6 out of a 78, but I would really like to know if it would work with my truck before thinking of buying it.
The C6 will work IF it has the "small block" bolt pattern (300, 302, 351w) and if it's from a 2wd truck. The drive shafts might not be the same length so you may need to find one in a junk yard, same for the crossmember/tranny mount. I think you'll also need a new shift linkage. Probably need a 302/c6 flywheel too.
The C6 was an option in '88 so you should be able to find the parts to make it a bolt-in affair. It's vacuum controlled so no issues with the ECM.
The AOD was also put in a lot of ford cars like the crown vic and mustang so if you decide the C6 is too much hassle you have some other sources.
Just so you know, the C6 is a strong tranny but it doesn't have a locking torque converter or overdrive so you'll be giving up some noticeable fuel economy and it might even make that 302 feel even more sluggish. I would be looking for either another AOD (depending on how I use the truck) or go for broke and swap in a ZF5 5-speed from an f250/350.
