I agree with ^. While they are already out... rebuild them. Call it preventative maintenance if you need to justify it... but not doing it now will cost you almost double when you have to eventually pull them again and go thru them anyway. Another set of seals and gaskets for basically the whole engine. Then the time and effort of doing it all again, when you could have saved yourself the headache by doing them now.
Yeah, it's already out so do it right. Rebuild kit is about $1100. Machine work, $5-800. You can stud the top and bottom for about $500, or just the top for $300 IIRC. Comp springs are another $100. All well worth is if you can swing it.
Those are supposedly anti-backflow valves. They are supposed to prevent the pressure pulses from the injectors firing from getting back to the fuel pressure regulator and messing with it.
Most people just take them out for better fuel flow when rebuilding the engine.
That would also be a good time to install something that eliminates the dead-ended fuel rail flow.
