ok guy and gals, ive been working on a friends truck for a while no in my spare time, and everything is back together and we are working on setting the timing, the truck is a 84 f150 that had a 302 and we swapped in a 74 model 351w, we bought a 85 model dist. before we knew the actual year of the engine.
So long story short, ive got the engine running after bringing the #1 cyl. to tdc and got the rotor pointing where the #1 plug wire should be, heres the odd part when i put a timing light on the scale on the h/b is way off, its reading way above 30 degrees adv. so what am i missing, ill be the first to say im not a ford guy or the greatest mechanic but im stumped, any help is greatly appreciated, sorry for the novel.
i had the same problem with an 89 i put together last year. ran like a dog until i bumped the timing to 25*. changed out balancers and it now likes 14*.
just last week i needed a balancer for another 5.8 project. grabbed the old one and same deal, 25-30*. the balancer looks fine but evidently the outer ring slipped on the inner hub. chances are this is what you are dealing with.
