I have a 1999 ford explorer and found an injector wire in bad shape. I need to repair the wire, with a new pin or the whole connector. The connectors are available, but is it ok to splice in a connector. I know there is a special signal going out to the injector from the computer. Do I need to solder the wire leads and use heat shrink? Is there a pin or socket that can be bought to repair the connector by shortening the wire? Any thoughts on this issue?
You would be fine to replace the connector with a new pigtail, but I would suggest if doing so you stagger the splices, use a hook solder splice method, and cover with adhesive lined shrink sleeving. The adhesive lined sleeving is not necessarily readily available at local stores and you would probably be just fine with regular shrink sleeving, but my preference would be the adhesive lined. That provides a more weather-tight repair.
I would not suggest just crimping on new terminals if that requires shortening the wire length, nor would I recommend a crimp on splice to connect a pigtail. The signals are just pulsed DC (square wave of varying pulse width) so it doesn't require special wire or twists and it is not very sensitive to wire length (within reason).
I have in moisture and marine environment, lightly coated the soldered wire splice (Western roll) with silicone and then heat shrinking over. The shrink tubing squeezes the RTV and makes a water tight seal.... Philip
Once again you have introduced something I have never known. The (Western Roll) or "Western Union Splice" is very well described on Wikipedia. I shall be using your method of splicing and water proofing solid wires from now on. Thank You.
