Crossmember removal

On the rear of my truck is an X cross member that used to house the winch and spare tire. Is this piece structurally important or can it be removed safely?

I am no engineer but my guess it no. I would imagine that it provides ridgity to the rear of the bed. Especially with some weight in the bed. Would also think it helps with the hitch load when pulling. Just my thoughts.

My thoughts too. It looks beefy but not all trucks have it, for example cab and chassis trucks have a fuel tank there. I'm wondering if maybe they have something else in place of it.
