On my 83 f150 4x4 5.8l truck, the windshield leaks. My insurance company suggests to break it and they'll replace it...instead of them removing and resealing. Crazy. I've tried silicones but they peel off. Anyone have a suggestion on what I can use to stop the leak?
one of my older trucks had a leak right at the top center of the windshield. i took the weather stripping out and used caulk. worked well if you fill it nice.
I also used it to seal the sun roof on my daughter's Volkswagen, which had been leaking profusely. It almost sealed it completely, but it would still leak a tiny bit in a downpour.

I like the break it and we'll replace plan - Except where will your Insurance comapny get the windshield molding retaining clips when they break a few of those?
It took a lot of reseach and a little luck just to get a couple of retaining clips for my 82 windshield trim (btw - there is not even a part number for the lower and upper trim clips that go into the trim channel. These only came on the trim itself).

Be careful. If you go the break it route, don't let them put a 1987-1996 type windshield in there. Demand the right one for your truck.
As for the Windshield reveal clips. you are mistaken about the upper clips...

X2 on that! Been there, done that. The problem is that the VIN is in a different place on the later trucks, and the clear spot in the windshield to reveal the VIN does show the VIN on our trucks. I had a big problem selling my '82 because of that, and finally had to remove the dash cover and the inspector was gracious enough to look at the VIN with a flashlight and a mirror - but not all of them are likely to do that.

I've got the same problem, and it will have to be corrected on down the line at some point.
The glass company I went to, did not want to swap the '87-96 windshield out, so my only recourse is to sue them.
Sure I have an open and shut case, the work order, My make and model, and the part number of the windshield they installed. However after court costs, it's cheaper just to buy a correct windshield later when a problem arises. I've kept the reciept incase of any unforseen problems etc...

Still makes me mad though.
Yes, everyone needs to know about this problem. I didn't ask, nor did the windshield installer mention that he wasn't installing the right windshield, so I would have had a harder time winning the battle. So, next round I'll make sure up front.

The problem is the glass shop's computer states that the 87-96 windshield can be used in place of the 80-86. They only stock the 87-96 etc... The main reason why the shop wouldn't swap out the windshield in my truck after installation.
Well technically it can be used in place of, but it's not legal to do so.
I should have told them before I had them install it. I asked for a OEM replacement windshield, took off for several hours and when I got back noticed the 87-96 windshield. Was upset to say the least.

Obviously it isn't legal, and I sure understand your angst. Might this be something for the local TV station? Here in Tulsa the local stations have a competition to see which one can solve more of their viewer's problems - those where a view is obviously right but the company is hiding behind voice mail or somesuch.
A co-worker had a windshield installed in an 86 he was selling, they put the wrong one in, you know it's the same from 80-96, right? Wrong, he made them come back and put the correct one in. I had to relocate my VIN plate when I put the 95 dash in, I think it was 5 1/2" closer to the left side. Apparently this was done to make it easier to read.

So, how did you relo it? I'm thinking through various ways to ..... well, a, ways to "relo" a VIN.
