Tim, thanks for sharing.
We haven't had chicks for quite a few years.
Every time we go to the farm store, my wife and daughter beat me up pretty bad about needing to get some. LOL

Roy can't use that weather excuse either!!!!

You can use chickens to help fertilize for crops, right? I hear of this thing called a chicken tractor?

Chicken Tractor is a small movable chicken pin, so you can move the chickens around your yard.

We just mow the grass and empty the bags in the chicken pen.

They eat the grass and fertilize it for you. No spreading the chicken chit around from the pen.

Tim, that looks like too much work for me !!
Dak, when you get chickens you will need a dog.
Get a puppy after you have your chickens started, then it will protect them and you can let them free range all they want

We had a collie mix that was constantly rounding them up and looking out for them.

What type of dog? We were looking at KBD's... But that might not be the best breed. I haven't seen collie's up here.

Free range up here is tricky. Lots of things like to eat chickens. Bears and hawks and bald eagles. My neighbor raises pigeons - why I don't know - not like he eats them. But the hawks/eagles every once in a while sure have a good meal as several go missing at once. Also the owls get in on the action too. Ever year there is a story in the paper about an owl that takes a small dog out of an owner's HAND while they are holding them outside the house. That has to be scary... And they will attack humans too.. One reason to ALWAYS be armed. It aint always the 2 legged animal. Sometimes it is the 4-legged or winged ones that will get you too.

A KBD will chase a bear or a moose away. It is a hunting and fiesty breed. They don't get that big either. Sorta collie sized.. KBD = Karelian Bear Dog.

Howdy y'all!

Looks like several of you were up late sharing pics of chicks! Awesome. 4 pages is too much for me to recap, but it was enjoyable reading at 04:00.

Have a great day all.
