Need people's $.02

Back in Nov of '11 I bought a 350 drw. My 06 Dodge was needing a lot of work so I thought it would be a good time to trade up. I got the drw because the daughter was wanting to start showing livestock for 4-H and I wanted the dually for pulling the trailer to the stock shows. Now she is leaning towards sports. Granted I use the truck to pull a trailer around the farm, but just don't use it enough to justify having a dually. Question is should I trade for a srw(whether it is a 250 or 350) or even a gas burner, just something that would get the job done the few times I need to yank a trailer around. Or should I just keep the dually since I have it the way I want, even though it would have two more tires to wear out. Would I get any better mpg with a srw ( get 13-15 now) Just wanting some others opinion. Thanks

In my opinion, you can never have too much truck. Plus, you've got what you want. Another plus is that it is a 350. Too many people get a 250 then realize they should've gone bigger. For the difference in fuel mileage, I don't think it would be worth trading to me. Of course, I am partial to duallies.

I would keep the DRW! Especially since you have what you want. Your life may turn back towards towing more. If that happens you just cant beat a DRW.

For me personally, I can wear out quite a few tires and pay a little extra for fuel when compared to the raping your going to take on a trade. Unless you know someone who knows someone who ...

I think it has to be an individual thing. I love my dually. But if I wasn't rollin down the highway at +27K, I wouldn't be driving a dually. I bought it for the safety features a dually provides when towing heavy. Sure you can pull 18-19,000 pounds down the road on a srw. To me, it's more about peace of mind while doing it. If we ever go smaller with the 5er, I would probably go back to a srw.

That's just this guys opinion.

No way I'd trade in that truck. I'd drive the crap out of it and enjoy every minute of it.

the loss will be too great. Besides future use may change things...and your Daughter...she will change another 20 times before she heads to college.

I agree with the other guys especially Ron, I got the dually so as I get older I have peace of mind with the added safety that a dually provides. Sometimes overkill allows you to drive more relaxed and sleep better at night. About 5 years ago I took some vacation and went to a truck driving school to get my CDL and drove one for 6 months all over the country and the one thing I learned early on is....it is always better to have more truck than you think you need.

Just my .03 cents (inflation) lol.

Keep the dually. I had one for 18 years and really miss it.
My F250 is great, but I really miss the duals. It just felt so much stable, and I think they look a whole lot nicer.

I would say keep the Dually, any trade you might do is gonna cost you & unless it's just eating you up, it would take a long time to recuop the cost. just my nickels worth

I lost well over $20,000 trading my last '11 6.2 for the 6.7. I will never have another truck with sparkplugs again and learned if its the way you want it keep it. Tires are cheap mpg is not that better on srw you can never recoup the cost of trading for that reason.

I say, do what feels right to you. If you want to trade for a SRW, do it. It's only money and you can't take it with you. No reason to be unhappy with your 60k+ truck over a couple thousand dollars.

I'd keep it and drive the wee out of it. Put a tuner on it at about 80k miles. Teach your daughter how to drive in it. Replace the beat up bed with a custom flatbed. Side load mini bulks in it. When it hits 250k miles- give it to your daughter. My.02 cents.

Thank you for all your replies. I think i have talked myself out of trading. Everyone's points is what I have been thinking of for a while now. I just can't give that much money to trade for the same truck with only 4 tires.

I agree with everyone else on the trade numbers. If you're concerned with the dollars then you're better off sitting where you are now.

That having been said, my SRW CCLB is all the truck I use. I'm like you - I don't yank a trailer around all the time. I do load up the bed quite a bit and I'm sure glad I have a 350 and not a 250 for the overload springs. The old 250's were a lot tougher, now they're just too soft anymore. When you load them you're riding on the bump stops (unless you put air bags or overload springs on).

If you are on the road all the time with a big trailer the DRW's offer a lot more stability. I used to drive long haul in one and it was great. That having been said, there isn't much I can't do with my SRW. If I was pulling a gooseneck or 5th wheel trailer more often I may re-think that, but I've never pulled one yet so I'm not worried about it.

As for fuel mileage - my all-up fuel mileage over about 27,000 miles is 16.9mpg. I have 3.55 gears and 20" wheels, if that helps you any. I am guessing your DRW has 3.73's and 17 or 18" wheels.
