when i start my X when its cold or hasnt completely warmed up, I get this metal-like sound i guess i would describe it as thin sheet metal being crumpled into a ball. It goes away after 1-2 seconds. I have had no problems execept i had to replace my IAC motor in November due to rough start, no start when cold, it solved the problem right away. Could it be lifters? It does not sound like what the typical 2.9 sounded like when the lifters are going. Could it be????????
Would you also describe the noise as a real tinny rattle? If so, then I'll bet it's loose heat shields (for the catalytic converter). Rangers and Explorers are notorious for this.
Same sound same solution. It's pretty simple to fix. It just has 2 clips that come loose. I thought is was my converter and was just about to go at it when i found the heat shield loose.
i would describe it as a tinny rattle but a loose heat shield? Wouldnt the sound occur at idle 90% of the time? This is only at a cold start/very lite warm start for 2 seconds?? what do you guys think??
