exhaust

I am putting a 351M in a 1980 F-150 and wondering what to do about exhaust. Someone mentioned headers, directly into glasspaks and then straight pipes out. Someone else said that will be too loud. I am new to all of this and don't know what to do. I want it to rumble and go. Any suggestions?

exhaust

Welcome to FTE Brad,
First off, do you want duals? Ive had duals on pickup trucks in the past ( dont now, seems everyone and their uncle does though). Ive never personally run glasspacks. I would rather have metal mufflers determining my exhaust note rather than fiberglass packing that will eventually burn out. Do you have emissions to worry about where you are? Headers? Absolutely. They are a great purchase for any vehicle. What kind of exhaust note are you looking for?

dual exhaust good
fiberglass fine
glasspacks white trash

I recommend dynomax welded oval mufflers
Flowmasters sound really good, but don't flow real well (fine for stock motor)

I am not sure of the tone that I want - throaty is how I would describe it, but I am sure it is not technical. I did listen to the sound bite on the 2.5 without muffler and that sounds good.

Someone mentioned attaching Thrush mufflers directly to the headers. What about that?

I will do duals.

Thanks for the glass pack info.

Thanks for the replies. THis is a great site for us amateurs!!

I personally like the sound of Flowmasters, but because of the interior noise (and just becuase I wanna try something else out) I am gonna get a dynomax ultraflow.
Here are a couple links to my exhaust...
