4.6 Vs 4.9?

A buddy of mine has a 98 F150 4x4 with the 4.6 liter V8 backed by an automatic, I am guessing he has 3.73 gears but not positive. My 84 4wd has the 300 I6 that has been punched .040 over with an RV cam, Flowmaster exhaust, and the stock 1 bbl carb. I am running the 4 speed granny box with 3.08 gears. He thinks he could pull me if we hooked bumpers, I feel otherwise. What do you all think?

Gears & engine don't really matter. Who has more weight on the rear wheels, and whose point of connection (bumper) is higher?

your 84 should be heavier (less plastic) and has a better bottom line whith the 300-6. I would say you would at least get a good fight.

4.6 Vs 4.9?

steve83...
Well both trucks sit pretty close to the same height, but mine is a longbed and his is a shortbed. I am running a fresh set of 31/10.5 all terrains and he is running the stock Goodyear RTS with less than 50% tread. Plus I am running a locker and he has limited slip. I think I could tow him because I do have a definate traction advantage. Which engine do you think has the best low end torque?

seems pretty much even to me. that 4.6 may have more power and torque, but you probablyt still peak at an rpm much lower than his (gotta look up the specs on that 4.6 again). combine that with the actual truck you have, plus that granny gear, and it should be pretty close, more of a tossup as to who is the better driver IMO.

traction wise if you put all his wieght on your truck i think youll win, but its very close. the 4.6 has 205hp and 255 torque. the 300 is aorund the same for torque but only 140 for hp. too close to tell

You have a slight disadvantage because of your longer wheelbase. On pavement, your engine, tires, & differential have NO effect, other than by sheer weight. With the longer wheelbase, you won't get as much weight shift to the rear axle. That's the most important thing in a pull-off, since it has a FAR greater impact on your traction (on pavement) than anything else. If you can hold traction (meaning your tires don't slip), it means either you're pulling him, or his tires are spinning (because you're sitting on the brakes).

Actually, letting him spin his tires helps you, because once he breaks them loose, it's easier for you to pull him.

Concentrate on WEIGHT on the rear axle and you'll win.

4.6 = gutless, just put it in granny and 4 low and drag the thing around. Even though he has 3.73's, your granny low and 4 low will far make up for your 3.08's, and if you do it in 2wd, use granny and 4 low and dont lock the hubs.

In that case, you'll ALSO need aggressive tires, in addition to lots of rear-axle weight.

How about if I fill the bed with logs and air the 31/10.5 All Terrains down to 20 psi? Drop it in low range and pop into granny gear!

Keep the tires aired up. With high load, you could blow them off the rims. Don't OVERload it - just even out the weight on the axles so you have 50/50 distribution. Low range isn't necessary with a granny gear - you're not pulling 10 tons.
