I would really like to buy a CB and a Scanner for my pickup. I know a little about each but not nearly enough to decide on what would be the best one of each for me to buy. Considering how expensive they can be I thought it would be best to ask some opinions.
For the CB I mainly want to be able to overhear road conditions, possible issues on the road and be able get out if in an emergency situation when a Cell wont work. Not to mention listening to the Chatter can be interesting at times. Are the NOAA channels worth worrying about? I have a Cobra 19 Ultra III I bought a few years ago to put in my camper. Still in the box waiting to be used. It doesn't have the NOAA channels though.
As far as a Scanner goes I really don't know much more about them than I can listen for emergency chatter and maybe avoid possible issues.
Ultimately Id like the most bang for the buck. If there are extras I more than likely will never use like Blue Tooth. I would like to avoid those types of things and save some money.
As always any and all opinions and advice are greatly appreciated.
I'd check to see if your local LE and Fire is on VHF or 800MHz before looking any further into the scanner. A lot of agencies have gone to 800MHz, which also tends to be a digital system. a typical VHF scanner will not let you hear anything on the 800 digital systems.
For the CB, you need channel 19 and that's it. Weather can be nice, but it an active REACT group will be of much more help.
What I find most useful about Ch-19 CB (other than speed traps) when traveling is that truckers will be talking about alternate routes around accidents and road construction. I plug mine into the audio aux jack and listen over the truck speakers. Just unplug it to automatically switch back to music.
I have a Cobra 29 LTD BT CB and love it. It has Bluetooth and has great range. I can talk to my friends for miles if the weather is right. The Bluetooth works right through the microphone. If you want to listen to the big rigs on the CB, they run different channels on different highways. I know around here it is 17 & 19. The county sheriffs and some state troopers run channel 10. Here is a link for it on Amazon. Amazon.com: Cobra 29 LTD BT 40-Channel CB Radio with Bluetooth Technology: Car Electronics
Cobra CB radios are timeless. They look nearly exactly like they did 30 years ago; only then "bluetooth" would have meant you were drinking grape juice.
