The number 2 cylinder has a rod knock. If i were to remove the spark plug wire from the #2 cylinder would the engine still be driveable on 5 cylinders and would this effectively stop the rod from being thrown??? Or would this cause more harm than good?
What else short of an engine rebuild can be done to ease the rod knock? I already use 20W50. Would 30W (straight weight) be better? She starts knocking at 50mph.
Running with no spark will NOT keep the rod from being thrown. Once it starts knocking, it's wearing fast even without the load of the combustion stroke, and still has stress from the spinning crank. 30W is lighter than 20W50, so you won't help it that way, and running any heavier oil, you risk starving the REST of the engine. Face it - you need a short block or a bottom-end rebuild. If you keep running it, you may need a long block or more.
