i have an 88EB and i get 8.5 mpg. it has efi and a k&N and 3 inch exhause with no muffler and i still get really bad mileage. i was thinking it was injectors. i really don't know what it is i have tried just about everything. could my cats be plugged up? i only have 33s on it and 3.08 gears. any help would be great thanks
With 3.08 gears and 33" tires, I'm surprized it will move without holding it on the floor. You need gears-BAD. My Bronco has 3.55 gears and 31" tires and it's sluggish. If you want to run the bigger tires, I would suggest something along the 3.73 gearsset. It will let the motor run at a higher RPM with out having to struggle to pull the truck.
Go with 4.10's 3.08's are way too high for 33" tires, 3.08's are even too high for 225's. With your overdrive the 4.10's will have a good cruse speed also
WOW, and I though 33's and 3.55's sucked. So, you must turn about 1100 rpm in overdrive at 70 mph... (if you have the overdrive). I only turn about 1800-1900 at 65-70....and that sucks! No "giddyup" to pass and a LOT of downshifting to keep up to speed on the hills. Definately, get 4.10's or 4.11's in it...you will see a major improvement. The problem is the engine being so far out of its power band which for most small block V8's is closer to 2500-2800 rpm.
I'm running 32s and I can't WAIT to get back onto 3.08s! I got a LLT brake cable yesterday for my replacement axle, so all I need now is time to swap out the 3.55 axle. If I had OD, I'd probably stick with the 3.55s, though.
I have a 351 and a c6 with a tight torque converter and a shift kit and don't have any problem turning the tires, I will get new gears though because i can peg it in second and I want lower gears to get more power.
