I have a 99 F250 SD with a 5.4L in it. About a month ago I noticed a knocking noise from the passanger side of the engin.
It sounds like a valve is knocking? Anyone out there had this problem? Any ideas?
The worst is when it has been sitting and you start it up. After a couple minutes it quites down but can still be heard. My Dad has a 2002 5.4L F250 SD and the dealer just put a new engine in his.
His started knocking like mine but worse. His was under warrenty mine is not.
I have the same kind of noise however its constant and has been there for about 2 years that I can remember. Seems louder under the truck, sounds very simular to a rock in your tire but follows rpm's. Should we worrie about either of these noises.
I think that my 2001 has some piston slap, I am not sure. It only has 28,000 miles on it. It goes away after a few monutes. I hate to get a new engine( if Ford would even replace it). It runs good and hasn't given me any problems yet. Are the replacement engines equiped with longer skirted pistons? I'd sure like for Ford to install me a 2004 3valve motor in there under warranty!!!

Been there done that... I had my engine replaced due to misbore - piston slap. As I recall the noise did sound like valve lash, but went away after about 2 minutes of operation (when the piston warmed up/expanded sufficiently to reduce the gap).
when I took it to dealer they asked to keep it overnight.
Next morning they started it, heard noise and ordered engine.
Not one of my happier moments, but relieved that Ford did stand behind their product!
