2001 V10 Excursion gas mileage
#2
8-12 range? My dually is in the 7-10.5 range. Depends how you drive it. I know one of the members with a V10 Ex gets about 8's on average but isn't easy on it. I've read some getting into the 14's on long highway trips, but maybe that's their "best" ever tank. Again having a dually doesn't do well for mileage, but the truck does work for me. Expect it to be low.

No prob. Just make sure you look at it with many angles. Lets say you could buy this Ex for $10k less than a more fuel efficient diesel truck. Can you make up that $10k in fuel savings? Even if it was $5k difference? How long do you plan on keeping the truck? If you plan on a long time a more expensive diesel would save you in the long run, depending on the mileage driven. This is NOT a gas/diesel debate for those reading this. It's a crunching numbers thinking statement. I've seen many people ditch a paid off SUV, gas truck for a more fuel efficient new diesel truck or car for that matter???? So payments and putting fuel in is better than just paying to put fuel in? Again diesel WILL give you better consistent mileage.

My 2002 X 4wd gets around 13-14 mpg on the highway and I don't do much city driving, but I suspect around 10 mpg. See my sig. Diesels aren't worth it unless you "need" the extra torque for towing. Non scientific study: pulling the same travel trailer with my F350 - I got 10-11 mpg... I then bought the X and got around 6-8 mpg. Most of the time I got 10 mpg with the diesel and 8 mpg with the X. As you can see the difference was not worth owning the diesel for me.

Honestly, I'm also looking at a 4wd Suburban & was wandering what the difference in mileage would be. The Suburban is 2 years older & I can get it for $1500 less.
I'm a DIE HARD FORD man but I'm looking at what I can haul all my family in on long trips & have plenty of room for luggage as well.
At this point the Suburban is the winner. I will tow my car trailer with it maybe once a year but I make a LOT of long trips & towing is not my concern.
Thanks for the help here!

The Suburban is not equal to the Excursion, but more equal to the Expedition. Apples to Apples... not Apples to Grapefruit.

If its a Suburban 2500 don't expect any much more MPG. Remember that the V10 is stone cold reliable and is a monster torquer when needed. It does behave well as a daily driver, its just thirsty.
My V10 dually gets about 11.5 mixed city/highway, 7.5 towing, and I dunno about highway, most of the time when I am on the highway I am pulling.
My F150 with a 5.4 only got about 14.5, my FIL had an Expedition with a 5.4 and it got about 13-14 around town.
As far as a van is concerned, my FIL has a Chevrolet 3500 15 passenger with a 350 and a 4l80e. It gets 12 around town, and 13.5-14 on the highway. I can't see a 4x4 Suburban getting a whole lot better in the real world.
Fact of the matter is the gasser MPG for most vehicles over 6000 lbs is not that great. If 1-2 MPG difference will break your budget, maybe you should look at something that will fit in your budget better.
Something like a 4.0 Explorer with the 3rd row, 4x4, and a rear luggage basket in the receiver hitch or a roof top carrier could help with your cargo needs on trips and such when needed and they are a great vehicle (Ford).
Good luck no matter what you decide.
Thanks!

I would say there is nothing like the excursion. What are you hoping to get for mileage from it or the burb?
When my X was stock, I was getting 14.5 on the road at 75-80. At about 7000 miles I lifted it and added 35 inch tires. With 35s I was averaging 13.5mpgs. That was with 3.73 gears. I now have 37s and 4.56 and get 12.5-13...last trip netted me almost 13.5 loaded with bumper carrier but at only 65-70 mph. Into the wind it can get down to 11. Towing 4-6000 pounds gets me 9.5-11. towing a bronco got me 8.0-8.5 and that was with the 37s and 4.56s

Took a family trip a couple weeks ago. Stayed off the interstate highways on the way out and I got 14.5 MPG in the Ex. This is in a 4wd Excursion with 4.33 rear end. On the way home we took interstates so the speeds were higher and our mileage dropped to 13. City driving really seems to drop the average no matter what you do, but I was happy with the highway mileage...

5.4s do not get noticeably different mileage unless towing then way worse. marginally better when unloaded and slow.
