Do you have esof? Or manual locking hubs. Try to manualally lock them.
We have esof, the lights on the dash were lit (for what that's worth), the hubs are auto, they were set at counter clock wise, I got out and rotated them with no change.
When you put it in 4x4 does the a/c go to defrost? If so you have a vaccum leak which could be in the hub its self or a hose or the vaccum pump. The esof hubs are a common issue. They can be rebuilt btw

I was not aware of that test, I will run it tomorrow.

It's the same system? Good to know, I always assumed it would be a different system so that driveline functions wouldn't be affected by an ancillary system but go figure.
OP, There's a TSB out for the A/C system for the vacum lines leading to the control panel might be worth a quick diagnosis before taking the hubs apart.

May be worth a look, the dashes were the same for a long time. But I'm not a tech, just trying to pass on some info I was digging through that seemed applicable.
not sure about the SD but on one of my wifes explorers the motor went out and we didnt find out till we got a good snow and could have used it.The light said it was in but it wasn't.
Then on another one the shaft that the motor turns to engage 4wd broke, put a new motor on but still didn't work, traded that one in on an '07, so far so good, but the snows a comin. We'll see.

I feal like I should have explained myself bwtter here. On your auto hubs, you should have a manual selection. Try to manually lock them. Your front drive shaft should turn. If 4x4 works, then you are not getting any vacume and your hubs are good. If 4x4 is still not working, your hubs are shot.
