I have a 72 ford 250 3/4ton with a 390 auto. Main bearing is going out and was looking to get a 5.0 out of a 90's 4X4 shortwide. Will this motor fit my old transmission?

I have the same '72, was wondering how you check for things wrong on the transmission. Mine doesn't seem to respond healthily.
Not to steal your thread or anything, but what spark plugs do you use?
Are you having trouble starting the motor, or just rough when running? To answer your question I use standard plugs. Went to NAPA a few months back and asked for a plug and wire set to fit my truck. The guy handed me what I needed for something like 40 bucks. If I were to recommend a plug I'd go with E3. They cost more but I here their worth it.

It runs great, smooth idle. I just meant that when I shift to reverse, it sits there a second before catching, unless I give a little gas right after shifting, which will make it catch immediately. Does that for drive sometimes as well.
carchub, The problem you are having is because the seals and (O) rings are leaking inside of the clutch drums and servos. When the weather gets cold it will get worse. Time for a rebuild. Please excuse the hi jack .
