When I purchased my truck used, I changed the oil and filter and fuel filter immediately. Here's the typical maintenance schedule:

Oil and filter-every 3000 for heavy use, 5000 for light use. Your truck hold 15 quarts of oil. Precharge the oil filter before replacing. I like Shell Rotella, but there are plenty of other good oils out there.

Fuel bowl/filter-Ford recommends every 15,000 miles. I usually change mine at 10,000 miles. Drain the water out of the fuel bowl (drain on mine is to the left of fuel bowl) every oil change until you smell diesel fuel. When changing the fuel filter, completely drain the fuel bowl and fill up with a cleaner like Standyne lubricity formula.

Lube-at every oil change.

Engine coolant-You need to add a coolant additive to prevent cavitation. The coolant additive is FW-16 and should be used along with test strips to maintain the proper level in your system. There are other coolant additives you can use as well, I just can't remember what they are called. DO NOT mix a different color coolant into your system. You can gum up your system because the different coolants are not compatible.

Unfortunately the online store at FTE does not offer a lot of this stuff right now.

Don't count on the local auto parts store knowing anything about diesel engines, they usually don't. I buy Shell Rotella T 15W 40 oil at Walmart. Walmart also sells Motorcraft oil filters. Don't use Fram filters! Your auto parts store should sell an assortment of oils and filters for use in your truck. Use 15W 40 oil. The fuel filter you can buy cheapest at an online store. They are usually almost half the price of someplace like autozone. Try Diesel Injection Service. My local Autozone had never even heard of a coolant additive for diesel engines and they don't sell one. Either pick it up at your local Ford or International service center or buy it online (Diesel Injection Service) along with the test strips. If you decide to use a fuel additive, make sure it contains absolutely NO ALCOHOL. If will let water past the fuel filter.

Just wanting to know from experiance people. Is there any difference between Rotella and Delo or is it just personal preference? Also, what do you think about using Lucas oil treatment at the oil change? thanks for any help

Rotella and Delo are both good oils. Use what you prefer. I wouldn't add any oil additives because they can actually do more harm than good. If oil companies felt it was necessary they would already have it as part of their already substantial additive package.
