There are 2 metal tubes coming up from the top center of the engine. both go into the carb. the 2 tubes are bolted into the top center piece. All of this is on the passenger side of the engine. what are they? one as you can see was disconnected. the engine will start if i put gas directly into the carb or spray enough cleaner to allow it to fire. it only runs for a second or 2 and thats it. i am thinking this is the cause. just trying to understand what this is.
That's the choke stove heater tube for your automatic choke. One end should have a piece of rubber tubing that connects to the underside of the air horn on your carb. The other side should be screwed into the choke housing.
Thanks!!! the ruber hose is connected. the threaded one however was not. Am I correct that this controls the choke? so that would cause the starting issue, correct?
The threaded size needs to be connected, else you have a vacuum leak.
It does control the choke. As the engine heats up, the air moving through that stove pipe gets hotter and makes the coil inside the choke housing expand, opening the choke. The symptoms you describe don't sound choke related, though.
Have you verified that you're getting gas pumped to the carb? If not, pull the rubber fuel hose off the front of the carb and stick it down in a bottle. Crank the engine over a few times and see if you've got any gas pumped into the bottle. I'm betting that the fuel pump isn't pumping and is in need of replacing.
I know that gas is at least getting to the filter on the front of the carb. i see a tube that looks like it sends gas to the back of the carb, not sure how to see if the gas is getting there, or anywhere past the filter. I did replace the filter to be sure it was getting through that and with it off, gas comes out when i try to crank it. the fuel pump is the mechanical one.
I'd start by cranking the engine over a few times and then pulling the air horn off the carburetor. If there's no gas in the bowl, you probably got a stuck or clogged needle. If there is gas in the bowl, you probably got some gunk down in the carb. Either way, I'd recommend getting a rebuild kit and give the carb a going-though.
