03 X 5.4 80,000 miles . It only happen twice but leaving for vacation in a week so i need to fix. after a short drive less than an 1/2 hour when you go to restart it wont start girlfriend driving both times, tunes over fine and after it sits for a couple of hours starts and runs fine, by the time i get home and go to check vehicle out it starts. I know its gas problem or electric but don`t know where to start. wasn`t sure if this is a common problem. Does excursion have a fuel pump control module like the F-150s i know they had issues. Going to change fuel filter and maybe fuel relay. Any help would be great hate to waste alot of money and time but right now i just throwing darts...
I have the v10 but basically the same. Mine did this a few times and then started to happen more often. I had my mechanic put fuel pressure gauges on it and drive it around as well as leave the ford computer hooked up while driving for a few days. He never found anything. I use mine to pull a camper and need to be reliable. I had a new fuel pump, filter and relay put in and knock on wood no problems. I hope this helps. Just keep in mind even if the pressure looks good it could still be the pump starting to go. Good luck
Update. Did it again this time i found out its not getting fuel. sprayed carburator cleaner in intake fired right up then shut off. I then disconnected battery for 10 minutes reconnected fired right up, did replace relay so sounds like fuel pump right any ideas would be great.
Hey I was having same issue, changed my fuel pump today. Its not too bad of a job, just need an 18mm socket to remove the four bolts holding the skid plate cover/tank combo. Put a stout jack underneath and remove bolts and ease her down, had to unhook all my lines before it was all the way down. I went with just the pump instead of the sending unit combo, was about $100 for the pump. To get the pump housing out of the tank are a couple of clips you have to push in when you pull it out, just see which way its pointing before it's removed so you can line it back up on install. There are 3 screws holding pump combo together so once its apart, just remove old pump and put new one in, has a few more parts but it's got instructions. Its a pita getting it all back lifted up but once you get a couple of the bolts back in its easy peasy. Just make sure all your lines are hooked back up right. Oh yeah unhook battery and syphon the extra gas out. An extra set of hands is helpful. I recruited my dad. Good luck. This wasn't every detail but it'll get ya going. Hope you get it back on the road.
Make sure PVC valve is completely in grommet and make sure no vaccum leaks in hose from PVC to throttle body. Had similar problems of random crank but no start. I tried replacing relays, fuel filter and was ready to do the fuel pump when I found this fix.
Update replaced fuel pump easy fix but had a little trouble getting ring on that holds unit in place, was surprised that there weren`t any straps holding tank in place just bolts holding shield in place. no problem so far...
We had trouble screwing the ring back on also, if thats what your talking about. Also no straps here either just the 4 bolts but mine did have some very thin bands looped over the top of the tank and into some of the holes on the shield, but then again it is a hefty shield.
Great info but not one of those threads tells where the relay is or what number it is. If been looking for the past 15 minutes. i think it in slot 5A for a V10. Can anyone confirm
this?
