Have ya determined without a doubt that ya are getting enough Fuel? Ya may just have a plugged filter or pump going out. Timing is only one place to look for this problem.
As for checking to see if the timing chain is worn this is how I do it.
Take of the cap from the dizzy. Put a socked and beaker bar on the crank pulley bolt.
Rock the engine back and forth and see how much slop is in the chain by how much ya have to move the crank before the rotor cap moves in the dizzy. It should not be much at all.
well like i said it was running fine and dandy, so i doubt it'd be not getting enough fuel
You don't know until you check. If everything was fine, you wouldn't be having an issue. Check the 4 things I told you to check. Your way isn't getting your truck fixed, so try ours.
Fuel, spark, compression. Out of the 3, I'd say fuel is the least dependable, most likely to "call in sick"
A quick way to see if you have fuel is to look down the carb with the choke plate open (engine not running) and flip the throttle all the way open. Watch for the 2 squirt streams of fuel.
You could also be flooding it (float failing or some crud holding the needle from seating)
spark is easy enough to check, pull a wire and let the spark jump a gap to ground while cranking over the engine.
Okay, well i didn't have time to do anything else to the truck, but i went out to mess with it and it started right up.....so im like ok? so i let it idle for forever, everything is fine i drive it around the yard a few times shutting it off and back on the whole time, so im like i guess its fixed, i take it about 5 miles down the road doing about 65, came back was still running fine, shut it off turned it back on, and still that little stuttering, i want to check my alternator but if i cant get the engine started again i cant take the positive off the battery while its running to see if its bad, any suggestions? sorry about such a long post i just wanted to make sure you guys can understand whats happening
You're probably right, damn cheapos from o'reillys, i bought one and had to use the warantee on it 2 weeks later, which is the one i have now, but i got an extra in the barn, so ill let ya guys know tm if thats what it is, too late to do it and test it out now
as a matter of fact that makes perfect sense, because when i put the engine in, i had the firing order wrong like 3 different times and cranked on the dang thing for about 30mins each time off and on, probably burnt that thing up
But please, slow down and gain some focus if you can, you are jumping all over the place lol!!
Starter? Alternator? Lol!!
Wait, what were we originally trying to fix?
I think you are getting some intermittent flooding.
When it starts stumbling like that, pull the air cleaner off while it's stumbling (running rough) and tap on the carburator with a hard plastic screw driver handle or lightly tap with a hammer or back sider of a wrench or what ever you have handy. (to help the float needle seat and stop the flow of fuel into the float bowl)
if it works, the idle will clean up in a few seconds.

I just dont understand how it could be anything like that if it runs fine the entire time, when i start it cold, i can run it for 2 hours and it run strong and fine, evrything working perfect, then as soon as i shut it off it wont start until i let it cool down, then it runs fine again? ive never heard of such...
You've maybe never heard of a lady in Okinawa Japan that does a stage show with a wine bottle, 10 bucks worth or quarters, 4 peeled bananas and a snake either...
Its hard to figure out just what your describing (if its a slow Romp-Romp-Romp hot crank?) If thats what your saying but if it happens again check your ground cable see if its hot and do you have a ground from the motor to frame, Feel the coil see if it really hot, Pull the coil wire off and see if it cranks faster if it does it might be the starter, Or you have a bad battery just because it holding 12v doesnt mean its good CCA's could be dieing or a bad cell.
