I have a 77 F-100 and the steering sticks which ever way I turn it.
I first thought it was my kingpins were either worn or in need of grease, so I checked them out and they just needed a little grease. And that was done.. but I still had the problem.
Today I noticed, when I turn my wheel side to side a little, it moves the section that my turn signal switch and 3 speed manual shifter arm is on.
I then looked to see what was doing it and saw the top section that the steering wheel is connected to rub against the section that has my levers on it.
I think that this is causing it to stick.
My arms are tired and I am beginning to think that this may be a safety issue, so I wanted to know if there is something I can do to fix this?
I took it to my uncle and he said that there is a bearing in the column and it may need grease, and then I showed him the parts that were rubbing together and the metal flakes that came off and he said that is my problem, but he is not sure why it is doing that....?
Anyone know ?
Does anyone have an exploded picture of a 76 1/2 or 77 F-100 Shortbox steering column with a 3 on the tree?
That also may be... But I took off my wheel and the signal switch and the first thing I noticed when I took off the wheel was the shaft in the middle....... It looks like somone pounded it with a big hammer, the end of it is mushroom'd .... So I figured one of the clips that keep it from slideing out are bent.. I took it apart some more and sure enough one of thoes C like clips that you have to have a special took to remove is bent and I think if I take it apart more I will find more things .... But that seems to be part of the problem.... You say the cab mounts are settling? How could I tell if they were? and are these hard to replace? Or is it just like bed mounts - take a wedge shove it where the rubber mount is take out the screw remove the old rubber piece and put a new one in and bolt it back up? Or is it more complicated then that?
Cab mounts eh? Hmm..... Are they expencive or hard to replace? And do I need any special tools? I looked underneath today and they are really soft spongy and cracked... What should I do?
