Anyone seen this? Ihave the stock stereo with rear controls in my 2000 Ex Limited, and the stereo seems to have a mind of its own. If its off, it will come on and play whatever the heck it wants. If its on CD changer, it will switch to radio and vice versa. Ive disconnected the rear controls, and no change. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I typically see them start with the volume control wanting to have a mind of it's own. It's time to replace the head unit with either a factory one or start playing in the aftermarket world. Pull your head unit and get the part number and then check on ebay.
+1 on checking electrical. Just remembered when I was adjusting my steering box, my wife commented on how the radio was going crazy, and the lights were going on and off. Cant believe I forgot about that. I dont know if it was coincedence or if I was actually "tickling its funny bone" Not sure what I might have been disturbing, as the only harness in that area is the one for the engine, that comes across the fender from the body harness. Will keep you posted!
Mine did this every once in a while. It usually would not do it if there was a cd in the player. If I were to change the cd, it would go all crazy and switch between cd, radio and tape. Power it off and it would come back on. Strange goings on I must say. I replaced mine.
Good, then I'm not the only one dealing with a crazy stereo. Mine will go days without doing anything then all of a sudden it will switch back and forth between fm & cd. I guess I'll start looking into replacing the head unit.
I've taken these crazy units out and replaced with another and the replacement worked fine. This rules out other wiring issues in at least the vehicles I've worked on. It's a pretty common issue with older radios of all makes and models - they don't last forever.
Hmmmm, I wonder if it may be a poor connection, much like the digital odometer on the Expys flickering. On the ol' Expy, i pulled the cluster out and reseated all the connections, on the digital read out, I found the grey ribbon cable to be rubbing on some exposed component pins soldered to the board below it. Suspect its similar, much like the compass/thermometer issue on the Ex.
My single Cd player rejects the CD's OK sometimes but sometimes they stay in there and eventually they will eject, maybe a couple days or a week later so now I afraid to use it thinking one will get stuck in there for good.

I haven't experienced the electrical problem note in the beginning of this thread, but my 6 cd stereo definitely likes to eat cds. It use to be I could use a credit card to get it out but now they get stuck so bad only way to reset it is to disconnect both batteries and that's a major pain. So I don't use the cd player anymore, I have the cube to transmit my music from phone to radio over FM.
i have the stock head unit out of my 01 limited (single disc player) that i just took out to replace with aftermarket. lemme know if you want to buy it. my dads 01 limited radio did this a year or so ago, and we just kinda dealt with it, now its been fine for the last year. no clue wtf it was lol
