My truck has 128,000 miles and I've never touched the differential lube. The axle code on the door jamb is H9.
The Ford parts department tells me Dino oil 80 W 90. However, my owners manual says Synthetic 75 W 140 with 4 oz of friction modifier. The parts guy said synthetic was only used on newer trucks, but obviously my manual contradicts that.
OK, so which is it? I need to get this done since I'll be pulling the boat 800 miles, one way on a trip this summer.
The "H" means limited slip, so you need the friction modifier. Either syn or dino will be fine, and many parts stores sell it with the modifier already in it.
Thanks Steve. Would you name a few of the brands that have the modifier already in them? Around here I have Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA, and Car Quest if that narrows my selections.
I wouldn't shop for greasy rags at the Zone . (Don't get me started... ) I know I've seen it at Pep Boys, but I don't remember the brand. Even if they don't have it premixed, any of them should have it.
I agree about Autozone. Most of the folks behind the counter can barely look up your vehicle info, let alone actually give you advice. I made the mistake of buying a starter there in January (AARRGH, why do these things die on Sundays????). That pile of junk has never sounded right and I'm looking for it to die by winter.
I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for and, well, I didn't pay much!
