I have the ocassion to use MANY different items slid into my truck's factory installed 2" receiver hitch.
2 different ball mounts-1 hd with provisions for the trailer weight distribution bars, 1 solid one with a 2" ball on one side and a 2 5/16" on the other, AND MANY different handicap scooter/powerchair lifts-(I have started a business of buying and selling these AND mobility scooters)
Everything I put into my hitch is loose fitting and sometimes its bothersome.
What can I do to fix this?
If the tube is worn you can take off the hitch, and have a welding shop replace the tube. They just air arc the tube loose and drill the hole in the new tube and weld it back together.
I don't think its MY hitch alone.....everyone elses hitch that I ultimatly put a lift unit on is as loose as mine, we bought a bolt-on receiver to put on the square tube bumper of our travel trailer to mount a bike rack and IT has a nut welded on the outside so you can run a bolt in to eliminate the slop....wonder if that would be a good idea with my TRUCK'S hitch?
Many receivers are very short, the hitch is longer than the receiver tube when I repair them I use a longer tube, and I also use a 5/8 NC bolt to secure it very few people will have wrenches to remove it and it stays tighter.
I have never tried shimming the receiver, If you put a 5/8 hole in the shim and secured it in that should work.
I have a tandem axle 4,000 lb trailer it has no tongue weight and is noisy on my sons truck, I may look into a shim, great thought.
You could also drill and tap your receiver tube, I did it to my front hitch to keep my homemade topside creeper stable. I tapped it on the bottom and on one side then I screw in a couple of short 3/8" bolts. If you decide to weld a nut on it you better burn it in pretty good or the tightening of the bolt will lift it off.
