My son is trying to get his grandfather's (my dad's) '82 F-150 going again. It had sat for a long, long time. The fuel tank was full of rust, so he decided to replace it. Wonderful after-market match for the OEM tank is here, and he dropped the old tank down and is ready to put the new one in place, but here's the question:
There is some padding on top of the tank, and on the support straps. This padding fell apart when the straps and tank were removed. Any idea where replacement padding can be found?
Old inner tube of some sort works. You could also use the insulation strips found at any hardware store. The main idea is to keep from chafing and wearing through over time.
I try to put a little extra paint or undercoating on top of the tank also. They like to rust when water gets inbetween this padding and the tank on top.
If you have the money, go ahead and replace the sending unit if it looks original, they all seem to fail on these trucks.
