A 351 is a terrible engine in my opinion. It's fine for a half ton but not 3/4 or 1 ton. Just my opinion. If you are towing a car 2-3 times a week, terrible choice. If you're towing a car around town once a month it's fine. Towing a decent size camper, not fine.
I had an f250 with 410 gears and 351 and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Had an identical one with a 460 and I've had it for over 10 years.
That's my opinion. But I'm not ready for compromise like that. I'm use to modded 460s and hot rod diesels. I tow 16k and think its a light load. I love what I do, and I do it real well, but couldnt even keep the 351 as a parts runner. sorry.
I agree it is all relative. You need to know what you plan on towing before you buy a truck. I have a 92 F250 5.8L. I only tow my Nove to the track a couple fo times a month. I also bought the truck to carry my truck camper. A few times a year. It does great for what I bought it for. It was available when I wanted to buy. Mine is adequate for what I bought it for. Wouldn't have minded a diesel if I could have found one for a decent price.
