Hey y'all, I'm looking to put up a zf behind my 400 in my 79 f250. I can get two wheel drive big block trans for cheap around hear(750), Would it be worth it to switch out the tail shaft/ housing to mate up with my 205? Or would I be better off to pay more for a 4x4 tranny?
Plus I've heard different things considering of the flywheel to input shaft relation when the 460 zf mates up behind the 400 flywheel(not enough of the input shaft rides in the pilot bearing). I am determined to get the zf in my truck, just let me know whats necessary. Thanks.
I don't know anything about the input shaft issue, but you will be much better off finding a 4x4 transmission than trying to convert a 4x2. You would have to completely disassemble the transmission and replace the mainshaft along with the tail housing.
Maybe moving the flywheel out from the engine with some sort of spacer would fix the spline engagement and the throw out Bering issue. Then the start would have to be pushed back as well.
