I finally went and bought my truck this weekend!!! I have been looking at it for a while. It was on a ranch around here and was just used to pull trailers and stuff around the 5000 acre ranch to fill cattle and deer feeders for the past 3 years. It's a 86 F250, 4x4, Ext. Cab, long bed, with a 460 and a 4 speed, with 3.55 gears. (limited slip also) It already has the gooseneck rigging. It also has all the options inside too. Power windows and locks, cruise, intermittent wipers, gauges and not just lights, and a fold-down rear bench seat. This thing still has all the emissions stuff on it.
So, here are the questions.
1. To remove the emissions stuff, can I just take it off and replace appropriate belts and the manifolds? Because I have another pair.
2. On my 78, I have headers and duels exiting out the passengers’ side in front of rear tire. Would the headers and or the exhaust swap over?
3. Is the slop in the shifter easy to fix/renew? and might replace clutch, any info on that?
Any tips or quirks and things to look for in these trucks will be appreciated.

If you're looking for headers and stuff for your truck, I've got a new set of headman headers and a full EDL power package everything never taken from there boxes I'm willing to get rid of. I bought it all to build my 460. But I gave up on the search for the right brackets to mount the motor in my truck and now going with a 351W
Not sure what all I'm going to do yet since it is mainly a work truck, but I'd be interested in hearing what you have. Email me at Chuky66(No Email Addresses In Posts!).

I'm right smack dab in the middle of west Texas. We don't have testing here, and I hate moving, so this is where I'll stay. What don't get burned in the combustion chamber here, bets burnt in the heat of the day after it comes out the exhaust pipe. And if that ain't enough, then the 500 pounds of west Texas dirt blowing through the air knocks all the pollution down to the ground for all the ants and spiders and snakes to eat. That's why it hurts so much when something bites, pokes, or ****** ya around here!!

I have an `85 F350 with 460 and so I am assuming that your truck and mine are essentially the same in regards to how the emissions are handled. If you find out differently then adjust accordingly.
When I bought my truck last year every emissions device was non-functional. All vacuum hoses were dry rotted and anything that had a diaphragm was shot because it too was dry rotted. This included the vacuum advance on the distributor. Therefore, there were vacuum leaks everywhere.
So, I removed it all. I pulled the two air pumps, all vacuum hoses, and EGR valve and plate. Since the carb was an emissions unit - and not working very well anyway - I replaced it with a non-emissions Edelbrcok unit. If you remove the EGR and do not address the carb you may well have a problem with pinging in light throttle conditions. In order to keep the carb up off the manifold when I removed the EGR plate I used a two inch spacer. The one other thing I have done is to use the pre-72 timing chain set in order to get the cam timed at the pre-emissions point. There is no difference in the cams in the pre and post emissions engines, just the timing. So, now I have basically a pre-emissions motor except for the low compression.
As for headers, don’t know if the ones you have will work, but headers normally really help these motors breathe. So, try them and see if they fit.
Hope this helps but don’t hesitate to ask questions.
Thanks mchild,
That's basically what I'm doing, and did do on my 78. I will put the holly 750 from it on this truck, and change the timing set in the near future to a aftermarket double roller and set it straight up. I got to looking yesterday and I don't think the headers will work. There is a axle and drive shaft in the way. Go figure!! Do you have a 4spd? If so? What clutch did you use? I am looking at a new one and will be doing some towing.
I'll take any advice!!
Yes, I do have a 4 speed but I have no idea what clutch is used. The trans and clutch were renewed just before I bought it but don’t know what was used and since it is now in good shape I hope to not have to be tearing into that area. I still have plenty of other things to do first.
