Well I got every thing wired up, pluged in, and turned the key. No display for temp and direction, but the dome lights worked. I grabbed one of the other consoles and same thing, third anf fourth, all the same , no dosplay. Started doing some trouble shooting and found there was no power getting up to the plug. So I grabbed another harness and hooked it in to check the consoles. 2 out of 4 that I have are bad. So I spliced in the good harness to the one I already had run and soldered in. So now everything apperas to work.
Make sure to calibrate it for direction. Heres how:
To acctually calibrate the compass:
Go find an abandoned parking lot and follow the following steps:
Press and hold the "MODE" button until you see "VAR" (takes around 5 seconds)
Release the "MODE" button. Push the "MODE" button until you have selected the zone you are currently in.
Release the "MODE" button and wait until the console is back at normal operation.
Press and hold the "MODE" button until you see "CAL" (takes around 9 seconds)
Release the "MODE" button.
Now the fun part. People will think you are crazy. Drive in a circle at around 3mph. Your console will be changing direction really fast. Continue to do this until the console is back at normal operations
Never would have crossed my mind that this is needed - it's not like a typical compass needs calibration.
But assuming that the vehicle remained in it's "native" zone, there shouldn't be any need for calibration, right? I presume it's held in flash memory, yes?
That's definantly going to be a welcomed addition...Now to open some funds up....
I'm going to rate this thread 5 *'s....VERY good info...
No problem. My local yard only charged me $12 for the console.

Thats what I thought. When I started to really pay attention to it I noticed it was saying East when I knew I was going North.

Any evidence that the vehicle was or was not from your home area? I suppose there's no harm in re-programming it regardless, although it still puzzles me how these things function vs. a "regular" compass.
How can I convince the wife that I absolutely need this in my truck................lol?
How can you not have a compass and thermometer in your truck in Alaska. Just let me know I have a second one in my truck that I already tested to make sure it works.

P.S. Complete with wiring harness and temp sensor
Your a bad man norfolknova!!
I've got one in my Dodge Ram and they are nice to have, do these calculate gas mileage and all that stuff too?
Got one of these consoles from the junkyard, and what I think is the temparuture sensor, but the wires on the sensor are not blue/yellow and blue/white, they are pink/black, and red/orange. Did I get the wrong sensor? I have no idea what year Explorer it was.
