Rocker arm differences & partial casting number

First, what is the difference between a "rail rocker arm" and a "sled rocker arm or sled fulcrum rocker arm? Can anyone give me a picture? I do much better with visuals. Trying to determine what I have on a possible 75-77 302.

Second, I've been through all the block and head casting number info here on his site and all over the Internert for my 74 -77 302. When I looked for the casting number on the right (driver side) head, all I could find is "302" at the back and "A3B" at the front. Although the truck is a 74 F100, I think the engine is a 75-77. I believe the heads are probably "D50E-A3B", but I cannot find the D05E on the head under the valve cover.

Sorry that I don't have pictures to post.

A rail rocker has tiny walls on the tip that surround the valve stem to keeps it aligned to the stem. Its fulcrum is a ball that fits into a mating socket in the arm, and the assembly is mounted on a stud. A sled rocker arm has a half-cylinder wedge with a pedestal for a fulcrum that fits into a mating cylindrical formation in the arm, which keeps the arm aligned. The cylinder is bolted by the pedestal to the head.

That's because the casting numbers aren't under the valve cover.. they're on the underside(head gasket side) of one of the central intake ports so you have to either remove the intake and use a mirror to see it or remove the head.

The block casting and date codes are above the starter. The head date code is cast next to the valve cover rail, on the inside of the rail. This is a number/letter/number combination, the first number being the year of the decade it was made. The letter is the month, beginning with "A" for January, thru "M" for December, skipping the letter "I". The second number or numbers is the day of the month the part was made. These numbers will tell you if the engine is closest to being original to your truck. The casting number prefix will only tell you the first model year that part was made for, it is not an positive indicator that it's original to your truck. For example, E7TE heads were produced and used for ten years in Mustangs, Pickups and Vans from late 1986 til sometime in 1997. Ditto for E7TE blocks, these were produced for about 4-5 years and used in every application that had a 5.0 engine until supperceded by the F1SE 5.0 block.

Appreciate all the info. While researching engine information and casting numbers, I found a post that that said 75 was the first year for the smog heads with air injection tubes on the back end of the heads, which is what I have. I also noticed that the engine has a 2150 carb, which I think came out in 75. As I may have mentioned before, the enge has the A/C mount, but the truck did not come with A/C. I also think the 74 F100 long bed came with the C6 trans and the one in mine is a C4, which is shorter. I'm just going to assume that the engine I have is probably a 75-77.

The transmission could be anything back then, C-4, C-6 or an FMX I had a 69 E330 van that had a C-4 in it. Does the transmission dipstick go into the pan, or the case behind the bellhousing ? If it's a case fill, it's not a pickup C-4
