Casting Numbers

ok this is probably gonna sound silly, where the heck are the cast numbers on small block fords. on 460s/modifieds they are right under the valve cover.... I have a 302 and a windsor in my shop and i can't find cast numbers on either. the only think i see is a two digit number around the valve cover rim on the outside towards the front(one is 40 the other is 18) and then a few other miscellaneous numbers under the rockers on the head. Am i looking in the right place? Are they still buried in grease??? both motors were pretty greasy.....Both are 87 model yr motors what heads could i have????

Your heads are probably E7TE, the casting number is located on the bottom of the head right next to where the pushrods go through. It can only be seen with the intake manifold off and you have to use a small mirror, or pull the head and turn it over.

I guess Ford never intended the casting number to be used for identification purposes so they didn't make it easy to get to.

The E7s are generally considered to be a better head than the E5. With some minor porting that you can usually do yourself they can be made to flow pretty well for a stock head.

Actual differences between the two are pretty slight. The E5AE was a decent head, but was replaced by the E6AE which sucked (just not well enough!) It was replaced by the E7 on trucks and H.O. motors because Ford quickly realized that the E6s just didn't have it for performance due to a different combustion chamber shape. They went back to the earlier chamber shape on the E7s, but the valve sizes and port volumes are listed as being the same between the E5AE and the E7TE, the main difference being improved internal water passages around the combustion chambers.
