Lots of people ( and me ) want there IDI to make wheel spinning load pulling power and torque. So what are the mild to free to exreme power modifications. Lets have everyone post something here. Here is my list. Turning up the pump a flat or two. Buying a turbo package Changing the gears Moddified engine internals.
All i can find on injectors are delco and some crappy rebuilt ones. And i want a pump bad (myne leaks) but im afraid to be the to install it and have to end up doing it like 3 times and it never being right.
Unfortunately, none of those options are free. The best thing I did for power was add a turbo. If your injection system is old, you should overhaul it to get some lost power back.
Sometimes you can find a good deal on a turbo kit. I got My banks for a lot less than most guys here because I found a guy selling a truck with a Banks in it. Originally, I wanted to buy the truck, fix a few things and sell it to make money. Once I saw the truck, it was pretty beat up and some clown had disassembled part of the engine and took the IP, timing gear and cover off. I didn't have the time or space for that kind of project, so I told him I could buy parts. The owner had bought the truck and it didn't run so some kid who called himself a "Diesel Tech" offered to fix the truck for cash. That worked well. For all I know, the owner could have just had air in the fuel lines and a set of crappy batteries. Buuut, that's how I got my Banks kit and a bunch of other goodies.
BB code injectors
rebuilt pump maxxed
turbo, I have an ATS 093
3in downpipe to 4in. straight pipe
a good transmision to get the power to the ground
I did all this with about 1000 bucks, the truck pulls my tractor and other equipment very well. I was neck to neck with a stock 7.3 psd superduty in a race the other day, good enough for me...for now
Does the turbo really make a difference ? I mean at just 8lbs. per square inch it sounds like the motor would be sucking in that much air or more. How many horses do you gain ? Does it cut back on black smoke on a hard pull ?

massive gains.i recently added a banks 2nd gen turbo to my factory n/a truck........feels just like i fit another half of an n/a idi engine under the hood.
the turbo even just reading 0 boost when cruising at 45mph down the road feels stronger than n/a did.when she peaks 9.5 lbs (banks stock settings) when pulling a grade......she remains in 3rd instead of kicking down to 2nd now.....and pulls the hill much faster and easier.
yes.it really makes a difference.

More air more fuel= more power... yes it cuts down on smoke too because of more air.
You need to go to a turbo site and read about a turbo...Dont worry I had to too, Like anything else you never can have too much knowledge. http://www.theturboforums.com/turbotech/main.htm And go to some of the tuner car sites you'll learn alot.
I'd say they add 25 to 50 hp you can feel....It really wakes these things up.
X2 Ford, it is night and day! I have a 93 with a Banks Sidewinder, and a 94 factory. The Banks is better, but the factory makes a huge difference. I am going to upgrade the factory downpipe, and do some other mods which will help, but the answer to your question is YES!
