We just picked up the new to us '02 Ex two weeks ago had mentioned to the wife that I wanted to put tires and wheels on it, no issue there.
This morning while working on the SD, I mentioned that I was going to wait on the tires and wheels until I did the lift kit, she comes off the hinge, what lift, you're not installing a lift on "my" car, the kids can barely get in now, what is the benefit of doing a lift other than it being higher....
Sorry needed a place to vent that wouldn't get me in trouble.
tell her that the leaf springs are severely worn and need to be replaced. it will cost more to replace them with stock parts than with the springs that will lift it.She wants to be safe right? Without doing the new springs and shocks, the truck is pretty much unstable while driving. That might work...................................
It was cheaper for me to do the procomp 4" lift than to replace the stock ford springs. Since I already needed tires, that wasn't another expense. The lift truly made the Ex a more comfortable ride, especially since the old springs were hitting the bumpstops.
I too have kids. I've had the lift for 2 1/2 years, so I've been through kids in snap in car seats and 5 pt harness seats. Only now can one kid get in the car seat by herself. I don't think its been too hard loading the kids However, the Ex is my daily driver, not my wife's.
Hope some of the above can help your argument for a lift. Good luck.
Get one of those ramps that they have for the back for pets. Kids will love it, and maybe she'll overlook? Just joking. Tell her how it increases the safety of the vehicle. Newer parts are almost always more reliable and safe than older original parts. Or you can do the Obiwan hand wave, "You do not see me installing the new lift"
She says that NOW, but later down the road she's gonna tell you:"The Excursion rides rough and bounces all over the place. It keeps wandering all over the road too! How are we (suddenly it's "we") going to fix this?"
Present it as a safety issue (which it is) you have PLENTY of threads on FTE that back up this "concern" and should warrant the spring upgrade for a better ride, better stability, no more bottoming out, and best of all no more wandering.
You'll end up installing the lift and you WILL have some thoughts while doing it, but keep your thoughts to yourself and as you have done, vent here.
Just give the kids a bucket and rope... That's how my Dad moves my truck for me while I am out of the country. Stands on the bucket climbs in, pulls bucket in... Reverse process for getting out.. LOL
