ABS light/speedo

ok so my '02 v10 4x4 with 103k is parked in my garage overnight so its toasty when i leave the house. but i've noticed when it sits out in the cold all day i'll get a intermittin ABS light. i left work one day at the first stop light i had a flashing ABS light. once the light turned green it went away and the system worked fine.

last night the truck sat out in 5F weather, i remote started it so it was warm inside..i left home and noticed about a mile down the road the ABS light came on and the speedo dropped, this lasted about 2 sec then came back no issue after that and the abs system is working just fine.

so, my question is what sensor would it be? i'm not 100% on how it works with the excursion. i know my explorer has a sensor in the rear axle and 2 sensors up front. i have not tryed pulling a code as the light doesnt stay..but i may throw the OBD2 reader in the console so i can try to catch it next time?

any input would be great..im still getting to know this truck.

Maybe your battery? I know that when I change the battery, I initially get the speedo reset and the ABS light stays on for some time before it goes out. How's your battery terminal connection?

My vote would be for the rear sensor, the one on the pumkin. Might be a loose connection on the there. Very easy to crawl under and check, even take out the sensor and clean.

i dont think its the battery, its pretty strong no signs of weakness allthough i dont know how old it is. just that its not factory. connections are good and clean..first thing i did when i got it home from the dealer lol!

ok i was hoping it would have the same type of rear pumpkin sensor. same thing today, drove it to work this morning and it was fine(in the 70F garage all night) sat out in 20F weather all day and when i left at the stop light it started flashing again...once i took off and got some heat built up in the rearend it went away.

now i just remebered my 91 f-250 last 2 years ago when cold(like the excursion) it would show like 4x the actual speed, that is untill the axles warmed up. we replaced all the diffs/t-case fluids last year for the first time(66k miles) and that fixed it. so i'm thinking clean the sensor then have the diff fluid changed soon!

thanks guys!

My sensor had metal shavings on it from when I regeared my truck two years ago. As soon as I cleaned it off, my truck started shifting properly and was it's normal self again.

Rear sensor...try cleaning or purchase new for $15 bucks. Shouldn't take 5 minutes to change.

i'm planning on pulling it out this weekend and taking a look. i have a sneeking suspition(sp) that its the factory oil in the diffs also. so i plan to clean the sensor see if that helps. then when i get my settlement i'm going to replace ALL the fluids in her so i know what i'm starting with

same deal today, except it was colder when i left. also lost the speedo for a split second again when the ABS light came on well driving. good part is the ABS is working

i'll post pics and update when i get into it just incase anyone else has the same problem or whatnot.

ok, i cleaned the rear sensor and it was really dirty with some metal fragments. clean it all up and got my finger in the hole w/a rag to clean around it.

soon as i backed out of the garage the light came on! ugh! i'll give it a few days.i'm thinking it could possibly be a front sensor? but i'm not sure where it gets the speed from? the rear sensor?

Sorry the cleaning didn't work...the speed/ABS information comes from the rear sensor. If you can find someone that can read ABS codes would work best but that can be difficult...I know. I hate to suggest replacing parts before identifing it bad, but it's only about $15-$20 dollars and that has to be the item giving you the intermittent ABS and Speedo issue. Keep us posted.

When I swapped a front hub, with a new sensor, the ABS light was on for a bit. I seem to remember the computer needs to learn the output from the new or clean sensor since it is different than what it knew. Others with more experience on this might be able to weigh in.

ok i think for sure im going to have to replace this. now i had another issue with what felt like a intermittin miss on the highway in o/d. well i've replaced all the plugs and the truck runs awsome. except i still have the slight miss...but now it happends every time the speedo drops and the ABS light comes on....could this be the TQ converter locking and unlocking due to a confusion with the speed sensor?!

i cleaned the sensor again and still no change...i took a vid of what it does so you can see. it gets worse the faster you go too at 80-100 it starts jumping all around like a pinball.

so for sure its that rear sensor?

I wonder if you may have that short in the steering column? There's a wire where the insulation is rubbed off and causing a short.

as i understood it that issue caused the O/D light not to work/or flash and make it unable to lock it out. i dont have that problem....so i'm really leaning on the rear speed srnsor

I'm leaning on the rear sensor if not the OSS sensor as well. These two sensors tell the truck how fast it's going and while the PCM tells it when to shift. If it's confused because a sensor is faulty, things like that happen.

The short in the column can present as a number of different problems depending on which of the three wires are worn and grounding. It takes 3 screws and a small screwdriver to pop out the lock tumbler and then you can confirm if it is a problem or not. For some the OD stops working for others the wire grounds a short that throws things wacky.
