Sometimes when I am sitting still with ac running it would just stop working. one minute you are getting 60 degree air in the drive though the next its 80+. Any ways today I started up and was on a gravel road. I went about 10mph on it for 1/4 mile and stopped to close the gate. When I got back in ac was blowing hot air. The e-fan was not running and I don't really know what conditions have to be met for it to kick in. I assume though that its just like any other fan and is there to take up the slack when the truck is not moving.
there is only a stock mechanical fan from the factory.so if you have an e-fan in there, that along with it's controller would be aftermarket.if you post some pics of them both, just trace out the wires and you should see where the po mounted the controller or perhaps just a switch.
a decent e-fan controller will have a devoted line for the A/C,so the fan(s) kick on with the dial.this is how mines set up.this way,you have very cold air just sitting in traffic/working off road etc.
post up some pics if you can.do you see the wires running from the fans? just follow them to see where they go.maybe he installed them using a controller with circuit barkers instead of fuseable links.that would explain the fans cutting out.be careful you don't sit too long without airflow or you could cook the compressor.
it's not factory,so there's no way to know what the previous owner did......you didn't swap out the mechanical fan for the e-fan(s) did you?
I don't know how to post pics. The pic link asked me for a URL. Anyways.
It still has factory fan and clutch on motor. This is just a little 10 inch e fan on the ac condenser.
If it runs too long without the fan there is some kind of pressure pop off on the hose that connects to the compressor that pops off. I think it builds to much pressure.
Is there any reason that I should not just wire it in with the compressor so that when the compressor kicks on it will will also?
yeah.maybe that's how it is now.but it might be triggered on the wrong side of the low pressure switch or something,so it's cycling on/off with the compressor.
if you see it tied in by the pump there, just unhook it and extend that line over to reach the low pressure switch over by the heater box.tie in there for the relay's trigger pin (pin 87) and the fan will keep running no matter what the pumps doing.it'll still only come on when you select MAX A/C - NORM A/C - or DEFROST just the same, and turn off when you select something else.

(even just outside air)
get yourself some reflective heat shield/sound proofing material.rip the old insulation right off if it's not half hanging or half gone already, and wrap the entire heater box with it.not just that little corner ford did.the difference is drastic keeping that engine bay heat out of there.i recently did this and couldn't believe the difference it made just using VENT.A/C will freeze ya to death.
